Division 2 - Round 1 2017 Playoffs Recap
Overview: Division 2 had the craziest Round 1 you'll ever see as 2 top 25 teams and a state powerhouse will be returning their equipment this week.
Round 1 summary: Where do we even begin? Division 2 defied all logic and predictions in week 10 which is why we love high school football. Ypsilanti Lincoln won their first ever playoff game vs. Woodhaven.
Upsets: #7 Walled Lake Western fell in overtime to a strong foe in #29 Livonia Franklin. #24 Midland lost by 8 to a reeling Traverse City Central at home. #38 Lowell lost 20-14 on the road at Flushing, it was the first time since 1999 that Lowell lost in the first round of the playoffs. #26 Groves fell at home vs. Brother Rice in triple overtime.
What to look forward to in Round 2: Traverse City will shut down for a night. An expected Friday 7pm game at Thirbly Field will feature Traverse City West vs. Traverse City Central in a week 3 rematch that West won 29-27. Both teams have had their highs and lows this season so there's no telling what will happen in this huge northern Michigan rematch.
#1 King took care of Edsel Ford to setup a rematch with #14 East English Village Prep who King beat just 2 weeks ago 21-0 in Ford Field. This game will shake up the dynamics of Division 2 following Round 1.
#25 Wyandotte Roosevelt took care of a tough Bedford opponent and will now host Ypsilanti Lincoln who will be appearing in their first ever District Championship game.
#9 Mona Shores will travel to #37 Forest Hills Central who probably should be ranked a bit higher, as they've defeated, Cedar Springs and West Ottawa in 2017. Mona Shores only loss was to Muskegon so despite Mona Shores being on the road, a Sailors loss would shake up Division 2 even more.
#28 Fenton lost a tough crossover to Waterford Mott in week 9, but the game should go along way in preparing them for the playoffs. Fenton will host a surging Flushing program who just beat state power Lowell. Fenton won their week 7 game vs. Flushing 52-35.
#29 Livonia Franklin at #22 Livonia Churchill is the type of game you live for as a student-athlete. Not only will it be a rematch of Churchill's 24-10 win in week 3, but it's 2 Livonia schools vs. one another with a District Championship on the line. We highlighted Franklin's win above, but Churchill blocked a field goal vs. Pinckney to preserve their Round 1 win.
#23 Oak Park didn't have much issues with Royal Oak in Round 1 winning by the score of 34-14. The Knights will host state power, Brother Rice in Round 2.
#12 De La Salle crushed Ferndale, they'll travel Northeast up I-94 to Port Huron Northern who defeated Roseville 12-7. Port Huron Northern will need the best offensive and defensive showing in their school history if they are to pull out a monumental upset in Round 2.
