Cranbrook falls to Notre Dame Prep 68-62 in MHSAA playoffs; Garner scores season high 31 points
The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes were defeated by the Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Irish 68-62 in the District Final round of the MHSAA Tournament Saturday. Cranbrook ends their season at 7-7, while Notre Dame Prep moves on to the Regional Semi-Final game with a 9-6 record.
Senior Cam Garner had a season high 31 points to lead the Cranes in the loss. Junior Jack Olis had 13 points to lead the scoring for the Irish.
Both teams got off to a fast pace early, with Cranbrook holding a 21-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. 3-point shots by seniors Graeme Gump, Miles Pistner, and sophomore John Kersh aided the perimeter shooting by Garner and low post play of senior Bryce Hall for the Cranes.
The Cranes found points at the free throw line from Garner, while junior Brandon McCaskill hit step-back jumpers to keep pace in the second quarter.
Cranbrook trailed 39-37 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Cranes push forward as Garner scored a three-point shot to keep the Cranes momentum. Pistner added key free throws as the Cranes sought to stay in the game.
The Cranes trailed 55-39 at the end of the third quarter.
The Irish stayed ahead with good free throw shooting down the stretch, while Garner closed the gap to 58-53 with a three-point play at 6:36 left in the fourth quarter.
In the end, Notre Dame converted on key possessions as time ran out giving them the playoff victory. The Irish advance to the regional round of the MHSAA playoffs.
Cranbrook ends it season having endured through one of the most unique times in recent history.
“I am extremely proud of this team,” said Cranes Head Coach Shane Finney. “Our team persevered through many challenges to get this far. They grew as a team around the love of basketball, and dedication to each other. I am proud of their efforts this season.”
